Christmas Day shopping
Following on from Shelley’s ‘Humbug Christmas’ blog, the trend of shopping traditions being moved earlier and earlier continues.
On Christmas Day, as my mother-in-law reminisced about when the January sales really were the January sales and otherwise you paid full price, an estimated 1 in 3 people were busy shopping online. According to a survey from Barclaycard, 31% of British adults planned to spend time on December 25th searching for deals on the web, which is more than the 27% planning to hit the stores for the Boxing Day sales. Online shopping is up 9% this year, compared with a rise of 1.2% in-store.
As someone who can’t stand crowds when shopping, I can fully see the appeal of getting my seasonal bargains online, particularly when it’s made so easy. Online retailers, not bound by high street opening hour laws, can launch their sales on Christmas Day (as did Argos, Amazon and Selfridges), whilst Harvey Nichols, House of Fraser, Debenhams, PC World and John Lewis pipped them to the post by launching theirs on Christmas Eve. Moreover, what better way to test out your freshly unwrapped new tablet than with a spot of online shopping (as happened in Shelley’s household)! One friend had three new tablets in her household and all had made purchases before Christmas lunch. The Samsung even helpfully came with Amazon as one of its ‘suggested’ apps for automatic download.
Although I’m a little young to start sounding like my mother-in-law, I can’t help but be slightly saddened by this news. My Christmas is about eating too much food, watching too much telly, going for a walk on which I get too cold and spending (just the right amount of) time with my family. For at least this one day of the year, shopping is the last thing on my mind. And that, to me at least, feels exactly how it should be.
